This weeks phrase: “I always want to frighten them more.”
Shirley Jackson, we have always lived in the castle.

Feldor stared at the castle, disappointed. No moat. No protective gargoyles, no drawbridge. It offered little in the way of protection. As far as castles went, it left much to be desired. It figured he would inherit a useless castle. At least it appeared to be in decent shape.

Let’s hope the inside has more to offer. To his surprise, it looked nothing like the outside. It was dark, drab, and looked like a dungeon with torture devices lining the walls. What did he inherit?

Noise from the back hall echoed through the entry chamber. He wasn’t alone. He drew his sword and followed the sound. Ahead a chamber door opened, and a boy emerged.

“Identify yourself,” Feldor shouted, pointing his sword at the intruder’s chest.

The boy bowed and stammered, “Sire, I am Aldren, your page.”

Pleased that he had more than a useless castle, Feldor questioned Aldren at length. Satisfied with his answers, he sheathed his sword.

“Aldren, why does this place look so pleasing on the outside, but in here it looks…”

“Sire, the former master’s goal was to frighten anyone who entered. It made him feel superior”

Faldor saw the advantage in that. He was pleased.

This was written for the 50 Word Thursday challenge, this week hosted by Kristian, Tales From the Mind of Kristian.

Give it a try. You might be surprised at what you can compose.
